Commandments For Canaan

Deuteronomy Chapter 6

The first three verses of this chapter give us the secret of a happy, fruitful, satisfied life. "He that doeth these sayings of Mine shall be likened unto a wise man" (Mat 7:24). We have here then-

I. A Solemn Declaration. "The Lord our God is one Lord" (Deuteronomy 6:4). This is His glorious and fearful Name (chap. Deuteronomy 28:58). "I and My Father are one" (Joh 14:9).

II. An Absorbing Attitude. "Thou shalt love the Lord with all thine heart, soul, and might" (Deuteronomy 6:5). If the Lord absorbs the affections there will be no more room for self or the world. No provision for the flesh (Php 1:21).

III. A Gracious Responsibility (Deuteronomy 6:6-9). When the Lord is loved His words will be treasured, thought of, talked, written, lived (Psa 1:2; Job 23:12).

IV. An Unmerited Possession (Deuteronomy 6:10-11). The inheritance of the saints, present or future, is not the fruit of their own labour, but the outcome of infinite grace (Eph 3:16-19).

V. A Needful Reminder. "Beware lest thou forget the Lord which brought thee out of bondage" (Deuteronomy 6:12). It will preserve our sympathies for the unsaved to remember that "such were some of us" (1Co 6:11).

VI. A Conditional Promise. "Do that which is right in the sight of the Lord that it may be well with thee" (Deuteronomy 6:18). "Walk before God" (Gen 17:1). Behave as in the presence of God (Mat 23:8).

VII. An Expected Testimony (Deuteronomy 6:21-25). "Thou shalt say," etc. Their testimony, like ours, consisted of-

1. A Confession of their past condition. "Bondmen in Egypt" (Deuteronomy 6:21).

2. An Acknowledgment of the Lord's righteous judgments against sin (Deuteronomy 6:22).

3. A Declaration of His power to save "from thence" (Deuteronomy 6:23).

4. An Assurance of His faithfulness to His Word "that He might bring us in" (Deuteronomy 6:23).

5. A Warning against the sin of unbelief (Deuteronomy 6:24).

6. An Encouragement to implicit obedience (Deuteronomy 6:25).
