Subtle Self

The glass snake, it is said, is the most difficult creature to catch. You lay hold on its tail, but it leaves its tail in your hand and quickly disappears. It will even divide its body into pieces to elude being entrapped. What a resemblance there is here to the glassy, sinful, slippery snake of self You lay hold on it, you mortify (make dead) its members, you crucify it, and reckon it dead, yet it lives, and if allowed will soon restore itself to its original form and vitality. Like the head of that old serpent the Devil it takes the power of the Almighty Christ to bruise it.
